Adah Sharma-starrer ‘The Kerala Story,’ which delves into the sensitive subject of forced conversions and trafficking of women, has been performing reasonably well at the box office. Despite facing opposition and controversy, the film has managed to pique audience curiosity, leading to decent collections in its first week. The polarizing views expressed on social media have also contributed to the film’s buzz. However, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has banned the film in her state, labelling it a ‘distorted story.’
‘The Kerala Story’ opened with a collection of Rs 8 crore on Friday, followed by a surge in numbers, earning Rs 11.22 crore on Saturday. Sunday turned out to be the highest-grossing day, with the film amassing Rs 16 crore nett. The film’s first weekend total stands at Rs 35.25 crore nett. The Monday estimate suggests a collection of Rs 10.50 crore, bringing the total to Rs 45.75 crore after four days.
Notably, ‘The Kerala Story’ has garnered support from actors like Anupam Kher and Kangana Ranaut. Anupam Kher, while addressing the media, strongly responded to the criticism and ban imposed on the film. He drew parallels with his own film, ‘The Kashmir Files,’ which was also labelled as a propaganda film. Kher stated that those opposing such films are often the same faces seen during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Shaheen Bagh, and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He dismissed their motives and deemed them irrelevant.
Vipul Shah, credited as the creative director of ‘The Kerala Story,’ expressed his intent to take legal action against the ban in West Bengal. Referring to the reports, he emphasized that if Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had indeed imposed the ban, they would pursue legal recourse within the bounds of the law.
Despite the controversies and bans surrounding ‘The Kerala Story,’ the film continues to attract attention at the box office, proving that it has struck a chord with certain sections of the audience. The ongoing debates surrounding its content and the involvement of notable figures in its support ensure that the film remains in the public eye, generating both interest and controversy.
