Actor-musician Shruti Haasan, renowned for her versatile talents in singing and acting across Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema, has been a vocal advocate for Indian-made English music. Despite her successful foray into the independent English music scene, she believes there’s still untapped potential for English music in India.

Reflecting on the prevalence of Hindi and Tamil songs featuring English lyrics, Shruti expressed her bewilderment, stating, “The number of Hindi and Tamil songs that have English lyrics is huge and no one is questioning that. It’s baffling for me.” She highlights the contrast in reception between such hybrid tracks and standalone English songs, noting a lingering aversion to the latter.

Shruti, whose discography includes tracks like “HER” and “Toxic,” acknowledges the evolving acceptance of indie English music. However, she emphasizes the disparity in reach between regional and English music, citing personal experiences with releases like “Monster Machine” and “Inimel.”

Addressing the challenges faced by Indian English music, Shruti points to audience bias as a significant obstacle. She emphasizes the pivotal role of audience support in driving change, urging fans to engage with and promote English music produced in India actively.

Shruti’s insights underscore the ongoing conversation about diversity and recognition within India’s music industry, advocating for a more inclusive platform for all genres, including English music.
