Renowned Playback Singer Bhavatharini Raja Succumbs to Battle with Liver Cancer

In a tragic turn of events, renowned playback singer Bhavatharini Raja, daughter of the legendary music director Ilaiyaraaja, breathed her last on January 25 in Sri Lanka. The 46-year-old artist had been undergoing treatment for liver cancer, and her demise marks a significant loss for the music industry.

Bhavatharini’s musical journey began with the chartbuster song Masthana Masthana in the film Raasaiya, showcasing her exceptional talent. She went on to make a name for herself, lending her soulful voice to numerous albums composed by her father and brothers.

A pinnacle moment in her career came in 2001 when she won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu in the movie Bharathi. This achievement highlighted her exceptional prowess and added another layer to her already illustrious career.

Beyond her success as a playback singer, Bhavatharini ventured into music direction, leaving an indelible mark. She composed for films like Mitr, and My Friend, and made her presence felt in the Telugu film industry with Avunaa and the Bollywood film Phir Milenge.

In June 2012, Bhavatharini showcased her versatility by scoring tunes for Vellachi, a village-based project. Her contributions extended beyond the musical realm, as she balanced her career with her personal life, being married to R. Sabariraj, an advertising executive.

The loss of Bhavatharini is deeply felt across the music fraternity. Her legacy will live on through the timeless melodies she gifted to Indian music. As her body is brought back to Chennai for the final rites on January 26, the industry mourns the departure of a true musical talent.
