Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the iconic film “Satya,” actor Manoj Bajpayee reflects on the significant impact it had on his career. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, “Satya” proved to be a game-changer for Bajpayee, who credits the film and Varma for shaping his trajectory in the industry. Portraying the unforgettable character of Bhiku Matre, Bajpayee acknowledges that “Satya” marked a turning point in his career, giving him the recognition and opportunities he had been striving for.
Recalling the circumstances that led to his role in the film, Bajpayee shares, “I was introduced to Ramu by Kannan Iyer. When Ramu found out that I played Maan Singh in ‘Bandit Queen,’ he expressed his admiration and mentioned that he always wanted to work with me. He advised me not to do ‘Daud,’ but I insisted on taking the role because it offered me a paycheck and a chance to perform. Although it was a small role, I didn’t mind because beggars can’t be choosers.”
Looking back, the 54-year-old actor becomes nostalgic, reminiscing about the memories he created during the shooting of “Satya.” He explains, “We had no idea how it would turn out. The excitement came from the fact that we were creating something we had always dreamed of, with the freedom to perform. We improvised daily because the writers and directors gave us that freedom to create and collaborate.”
When asked about the impact “Satya” had on the industry and the audience 25 years ago, Bajpayee reflects, “There is a clear distinction between the industry before ‘Satya’ and the industry after ‘Satya.’ It completely changed the way the industry perceived cinema and theatre actors. It’s remarkable in the sense that it instilled confidence in new talents in every department. This is the magic that ‘Satya’ has created. It allowed aspiring individuals from places like Lucknow or Patna to dream of coming to Mumbai and telling their stories.”
As the conversation nears its end, Bajpayee admits, “We all knew we were part of a fantastic film, but we couldn’t anticipate the amount of love and euphoria it would generate at the box office.”
Twenty-five years since its release, “Satya” continues to be celebrated as a milestone in Bollywood and a testament to the talent and vision of its cast and crew. For Manoj Bajpayee, it remains a cherished chapter in his career that propelled him to new heights and left an indelible mark on the industry.
