Controversy surrounds the release of ‘The Kerala Story’ directed by Sudipto Sen, as claims of exaggeration and propaganda continue to swirl around the film. The controversy initially began with the release of the trailer, which claimed that the film was based on the lives of 32,000 women who were forcefully converted to Islam and trafficked to join ISIS. After facing criticism for the factual accuracy of this claim, the number was reduced to ‘3’ in the revised version of the trailer.

However, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has called out the filmmakers for gross exaggeration and distortion of reality in the state. Despite the changes, the film’s producer, Vipul Amritlal Shah, has maintained his stand on the claims made in the initial trailer.

The Supreme Court refused to put a stay on the film’s release, stating that it is not hate speech and has received certification from the appropriate authorities. The bench also suggested that if there were any challenges to the film’s release, it should be through the appropriate forum.

During a special screening of the film at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University, director Sudipto Sen defended his claim of 32,000 women forcefully converted to Islam, stating that the number is arbitrary and based on facts. The controversy around ‘The Kerala Story’ continues to divide opinions, with many challenging the alleged exaggerations and political agendas behind the film.
