Today, October 10, marks the 70th birthday of the iconic Indian actress Rekha. When we think of Rekha, words like “mysterious,” “gorgeous,” and “reserved” often come to mind. With an illustrious career spanning nearly 40 years, she has left an indelible mark on Bollywood with unforgettable performances in films like Silsila, Ijaazat, and Umrao Jaan.
Rekha’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Her turbulent love life has often been a topic of public fascination, and she has navigated a complex path both personally and professionally. Born to prominent Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan and Telugu actress Pushpavalli, Rekha initially had no desire to follow in her family’s cinematic footsteps. However, destiny had other plans.
Rekha began her career as a child artist in Telugu cinema, with notable roles in Inti Guttu (1958) and Rangula Ratnam (1966). She entered the film industry at just 13 years old, driven by her mother’s insistence to support the family financially. The early years were tough, as she faced harsh criticism regarding her acting skills and appearance.
Though her Bollywood debut in Sawan Bhadon (1970) brought her into the limelight, it was during the mid-1970s that she truly emerged as a versatile and remarkable actress. Over the decades, Rekha has starred in some of the most celebrated films in Indian cinema, solidifying her legacy as Bollywood’s everlasting diva.
