Ananya Panday faces criticism for “cringe” acting in a scene from the upcoming film Liger, co-produced by Karan Johar and starring Vijay Deverakonda. The scene in question features Vijay’s character confessing his love for Ananya’s Tanya, but she is taken aback after learning about his stammering problem. The video has gone viral on social media, with netizens slamming Ananya’s acting and inability to emote properly. Many have also criticized the portrayal of stammering as “borderline offensive.”
The video was shared on Reddit and has since been flooded with comments. One user wrote that Ananya looked like a “3-year-old,” while another commented that both actors were “terrible in this clip.” A third user pointed out that Ananya couldn’t even bring tears to her eyes while crying. Others suggested that Ananya and Sara Ali Khan, another Bollywood actress who has been criticized for her acting skills, should cry together in a scene.
Meanwhile, Vijay Deverakonda recently got emotional at the South Indian International Movie Awards 2022 (SIIMA) and indirectly addressed the failure of Liger, which was supposed to be his big break into Bollywood. While accepting an award at the ceremony, he promised to continue making great cinema despite the setback. In an interview with News18 Showsha, Vijay opened up about how he dealt with the failure and the criticism that came along with it. Directed by Puri Jagannadh, Liger also features an extended cameo by boxing legend Mike Tyson.
The film’s reception at the box office remains to be seen as it is yet to release. However, the backlash towards Ananya’s acting in the scene may not bode well for the film’s prospects. The controversy has sparked a debate about the need for better representation and sensitivity towards stammering and other speech disorders in media and entertainment.
