Adipurush, the highly anticipated film directed by Om Raut and featuring Prabhas and Kriti Sanon, has been receiving significant criticism following its release on June 16, 2023. The film, inspired by Indian mythology, has faced backlash from audiences and industry veterans alike for its creative choices and departure from traditional depictions.
Since the release of its first teaser, Adipurush has faced a barrage of criticism. Although the final trailer offered some hope for a visual spectacle, the film ultimately failed to meet the expectations of movie buffs. Cinephiles have been particularly vocal about their disappointment with the dialogues of Lord Hanuman, as well as the costumes and set design, which have been deemed unsatisfactory.
In response to the severe backlash, the makers of Adipurush decided to make changes to the controversial dialogues. The criticism primarily revolved around the portrayal of ancient characters, which was considered different from the iconic TV series Ramayan by Ramanand Sagar, based on the holy text by Saint Valmiki with the same title. These alterations were made in an attempt to address the concerns raised by the audience.
Gajendra Chauhan, known for his role as Yudhishthir in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat, expressed his discontent with Adipurush. In an interaction with India Today, he mentioned his decision not to watch the film, stating that it conflicted with his beliefs. Chauhan further criticized the dialogues, attributing their shortcomings to writer Manoj Muntashir, accusing him of copying material from various sources without achieving the depth of the original Mahabharat penned by Rahi Masoom Raza.
Girija Shankar, renowned for portraying Dhritrashtra in Mahabharat, shared his views on Adipurush with Hindustan Times. While he admitted to not having seen the film in its entirety, he expressed dissatisfaction with the promotional clips, teasers, and trailers. Shankar believed that the film heavily relied on computer graphics and lacked the depth and authenticity of the original content. He emphasized that Mahabharat, helmed by the talented and knowledgeable team of BR Chopra, Rahima Sun Raza, Ravi Chopra, and others, was in a league of its own and should not be compared to Adipurush.
Despite the criticism and controversies surrounding Adipurush, the film boasts a star-studded cast, including Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Sunny Singh, Devdatta Nage, Saif Ali Khan, Sonal Chauhan, and Vatsal Seth. As audiences and critics continue to share their opinions, it remains to be seen how the film will fare at the box office and whether it can overcome the polarizing reception it has received thus far.
