The highly-anticipated film Adipurush, starring Prabhas and Kriti Sanon, has faced a significant drop in box office collections on its fourth day amidst growing backlash and negative word of mouth. Directed by Om Raut, the Ramayana-based film received criticism for its dialogues, visual effects, and alleged mockery of the revered Hindu text. Despite a strong opening weekend, the film’s performance has suffered a setback. The makers have announced changes to the dialogues in response to the controversy, but its impact on the film’s collection remains uncertain.
Box Office Collection Drop and Trade Expert’s Statement:
According to trade expert Taran Adarsh, Adipurush experienced a sharp decline in collections on Monday. He took to Twitter to share the news, stating that negative word of mouth had affected the film’s performance. Further reports suggest that the film witnessed a 75 to 77 percent drop at the box office, accumulating only Rs 8.5 crores nett on its fourth day for the Hindi version. Consequently, the film’s total Hindi collection in India stands at Rs 108.50 crores nett.
Global Box Office Collection and Controversies:
While Adipurush crossed the Rs 340 crore mark globally over its opening weekend, the film’s collection took a hit due to controversies. One such controversy involved the mayor of Kathmandu, Balen Shah, banning all Indian movies in the city after the film referred to Janaki as the ‘daughter of India,’ while the mayor claims Sita was born in Nepal. The film has also faced criticism for certain dialogues, disappointing a significant section of the audience.
Dialogue Changes and Box Office Outlook:
Following the backlash and controversies, the makers of Adipurush apologized to the Kathmandu Mayor and announced their intention to revise the film’s dialogues. However, the impact of these changes on the film’s box office performance remains uncertain. The film’s collection on the first Monday fell short of expectations, with the Hindi version earning between Rs 8-10 crore nett. The overall four-day collection stands at approximately Rs 250 crore nett. With the drop in numbers and negative word of mouth, Adipurush’s future performance at the box office is uncertain.
