Balagam Mogilaiah, passed away on the morning of December 19, 2024, at a hospital in Warangal after a prolonged battle with a severe kidney ailment. Hailing from Telangana, Mogilaiah was one of the last surviving maestros of the Kinnera, a traditional string instrument closely resembling the veena.
The Kinnera, a traditional string instrument, has its origins dating back to the 4th century CE and has long been an integral part of certain communities, particularly among Dalits and nomadic tribes. Balagam Mogilaiah, like his father before him, was renowned for crafting his own unique version of the Kinnera, featuring a distinctive 12-string configuration. He was the only artist to both create and perform with this rare 12-string Kinnera.
Mogilaiah’s fame surged further with his appearance in the film Balagam, where, in addition to acting, he captivated audiences with his soulful rendition of the song “Thoduga Maa Thodundi,” which quickly became one of the film’s standout moments.
