Mohanlal’s abrupt resignation as the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) has sent shockwaves through the industry. The actor, along with the entire 17-member executive committee, announced their decision on Tuesday afternoon.
Citing moral grounds in light of allegations against some committee members, AMMA stated, “AMMA has decided to disband the executive committee. A new committee will be elected within two months.” The association plans to convene a general body meeting during this period to select fresh leadership aimed at revitalizing and strengthening the organization. They expressed gratitude for criticisms aimed at identifying shortcomings within AMMA.
The developments follow the revelations from the Justice Hema Committee report, which have sparked national outrage. Formed in response to the 2017 sexual assault of a Malayalam actress, the committee, headed by Justice K Hema (retired) along with former bureaucrat KB Valsalakumari and veteran actress Sharada, unearthed damning findings.
Reacting to the report, several actors have condemned the heinous acts described. Chiyaan Vikram labeled the findings as “disgusting,” while Tovino Thomas emphasized the necessity for stringent punishment and preventive measures to ensure workplace safety. Telugu star Nani echoed similar sentiments, describing the findings as “disturbing.” Earlier, Prithviraj Sukumaran had criticized AMMA’s handling of complaints from survivors, highlighting systemic failures in addressing such serious issues.
The developments underscore a pivotal moment for AMMA and the broader film industry, signaling a demand for accountability and reform in handling sensitive matters affecting its members.
