The shocking cases of sexual abuse and harassment highlighted in the Hema Committee report triggered a wave of mass resignations within the Malayalam film industry’s AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists). Notably, Mohanlal, the former president of the committee and a renowned actor, also stepped down from his role. Now, several months later, discussions about restructuring the association with new elected members are gaining traction.
Union Minister Suresh Gopi recently addressed the media, confirming the ongoing reforms within the AMMA committee. As he left the association’s office in Kochi, he encouraged new members to step forward and assume responsibility for the organization’s future. However, he refrained from commenting on the mass resignations that preceded this transition.
When asked if Mohanlal would return as President of AMMA with the new members, Suresh Gopi declined to comment on the matter as well. Currently, AMMA is being overseen by an ad hoc committee established for interim governance.
At a recent event for the Kerala Cricket League, Mohanlal addressed his decision to resign as President of AMMA for the first time. He stated, “If you’re wondering why we all stepped down from our positions, the answer is that the entire Malayalam film industry must take accountability. The report has brought to light not just one issue but multiple concerns. You are more aware of what those issues are than I am.”
For those unfamiliar, Mohanlal’s resignation from AMMA and his position as president sparked significant discussion on social media. Many criticized him, questioning whether he was aware of the troubling issues within the film industry. Others sought his response to the alarming cases of sexual abuse that had recently come to light.
