On a significant day when Disney’s 1928 classic “Steamboat Willie” entered the public domain, a startling revelation emerged – a horror comedy film titled “Mickey’s Mouse Trap” unleashed its trailer, casting Disney’s iconic Mickey Mouse as the antagonist.

The storyline revolves around Alex’s 21st birthday, disrupted as she remains stranded on a late-night shift at the amusement arcade. Her friends plan a surprise, but an ominous figure, a masked killer portraying Mickey Mouse, decides to weave a twisted game of survival.

The trailer, reminiscent of the eerie ambience akin to Chuck E. Cheese, showcases the Mickey Mouse-suited figure terrorizing and eliminating individuals, delivering a Five Nights at Freddy’s vibe from the previous year.

Adding a touch of self-awareness, the trailer infuses meta-humour about horror clichés, with characters discussing the ominous nature of the phrase “I’ll be right back,” foretelling doom in the genre.

Director Jamie Bailey shared, “We aimed to infuse amusement into the concept. It’s Mickey Mouse from Steamboat Willie committing murders; it’s absurd. Embracing the absurdity, we crafted the narrative with playful energy, and I believe that essence resonates through our work.”

The film features a talented ensemble including Sophie McIntosh, Callum Sywyk, Allegra Nocita, Ben Harris, Damir Kovic, Mackenzie Mills, Nick Biskupek, and Simon Phillips. Behind the scenes, the production boasts names like Paul Whitney, Mark Popejoy, Alexander Gausman, and Andrew Agopsowicz as producers, alongside Mem Ferda from Filmcore as co-producer.

Expected to hit screens in March, the film’s precise release date and distribution platform remain undisclosed.

Mickey’s Villainous Trail: From Pooh to Mickey “Mickey’s Mouse Trap” joins a recent trend of utilizing public-domain characters in horror narratives. Last year witnessed the release of “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” drawing from A.A. Milne’s original work, now part of the public domain for two years. In a similar vein, this year brings Tigger, another Pooh character, into the public domain.

The anticipation surrounding “Mickey’s Mouse Trap” marks an unprecedented amalgamation of nostalgia, fear, and twisted imagination as Disney’s beloved Mickey Mouse ventures into the realms of horror cinema.
