Australian cricketer David Warner’s passion for Indian cinema, especially his admiration for Allu Arjun’s films, is no secret. During the pandemic, Warner frequently shared videos on social media of himself recreating Arjun’s famous songs and dialogues with his family. Now, he’s set to make his Telugu film debut — but contrary to many expectations, it won’t be in an Allu Arjun film. Warner’s love for Indian films has been well-known for some time, and this was confirmed in a big reveal by producer Ravi Shankar of Mythri Movies at an event in Hyderabad on Monday evening. He announced that Warner would be making his debut in Telugu cinema in a film directed by Venky Kudumula. The movie, Robinhood, stars Nithiin and Sreeleela, and Warner will play a special role.
When the event anchor asked for more details, Shankar hesitated, jokingly saying, “There’s someone making a cameo in this film. I don’t know if I should reveal it.” However, after some encouragement from Nithiin, he disclosed, “David Warner has played a small role. I’m sorry, Venky, I had to spill the beans because they insisted. His character is going to be very exciting. It’s a proud moment for us to launch him in Indian cinema, especially with Robinhood.”
In September of the previous year, Australian media had leaked photos of Warner shooting for an Indian film in Melbourne. In these images, Warner was seen dressed in a white shirt, exiting a helicopter and carrying a lollipop, and even pulling a golden gun on goons with machine guns. While the specifics of the film remained unclear, it was confirmed to be an Indian production. This came shortly after Warner worked on an advertisement with filmmaker SS Rajamouli in April. Many fans had speculated that Warner might appear in Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2: The Rule, which was released in December, but it turns out his debut will be in Robinhood instead.
