Basil Joseph wins Best Director at Asian Academy Creative Awards 2022

Malayalam filmmaker Basil Joseph, who helmed last year’s hit Minnal Murali starring Tovino Thomas, won the Best Director Award at the Asian Academy Creative Awards 2022.

Malayalam filmmaker Basil Joseph, who helmed last year’s hit Minnal Murali starring Tovino Thomas, won the Best Director Award at the Asian Academy Creative Awards 2022. The 32-year-old director said that he felt proud to be a part of the Malayalam film industry. He also said that he was proud to represent India on the international stage.

“I feel overwhelmed and honoured to be declared as the best director among 16 countries at the Asian Academy Awards 2022. Today, I feel prouder than ever to be a part of the Malayalam movie industry and to represent India on this stage,” Joseph wrote on Twitter, and shared a photo holding the trophy.

Basil Joseph thanked the team of Netflix and the entire cast and crew of the film for being his big support system. The filmmaker then shared a video from the winning moment.

Minnal Murali’s leading man Tovino Thomas, superstar Mohanlal, and actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran, among others congratulated Joseph on his win. “Congratulations on this feat, dear @basiljoseph25! You have made our home proud!” wrote Mohanlal.

Prithviraj Sukumaran wrote, “Big big congratulations @basiljoseph25 Way to go!.” Tovino Thomas, who played the titular character in the superhero flick, shared the Asian Academy Awards video on his Instagram handle and wrote: “Proud of you my buoy !!!”

Set in the ’90s, the film unfolds the tale of an ordinary man who becomes a superhuman after being struck by lightning. Guru Somasundaram, Harisree Ashokan, and Aju Varghese were also seen in pivotal roles in Minnal Murali.
